Winter 2014 Episode Rankings – Week 7

A bit of a quiet week, anime-wise, with Gin no Saji S2Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, Nobunaga the Fool AND Samurai Flamenco all taking a short break. I’m not complaining though, since it makes it that much easier for me to catch up! It did make my usual list format look a little unbalanced though, so I’ve shrunk the green and red zones to four series as opposed to the usual five… not that they actually mean anything!

There also seems to be a lot more upward movement than usual this week, can’t imagine why… I’m not sure the arrows are of much use when several shows are missing, the perfect example being Phi Brain S3’s four rank ‘climb’ to last place, but I’ve yet to figure out an easy way of working around that. Meh, it doesn’t happen often. 😛

Mitsuo's death flag was fairly obviously triggered in the previous ep... didn't make the scene any less emotional, though.

Moving up:

One show that has truly earned its rise in my rankings is Love Song of a Certain Pilot! After a strong start, the introduction of several interesting characters, and multiple world-building flashbacks, the show briefly faded into light-hearted slice of life, and wasn’t interesting me as much. Seems that was just the calm before the storm, however – this week the mysterious ‘Sky Clan’ launched a surprise attack on Isla, and the majority of the trainee pilots got sent out to do recon! It soon becomes apparent that their enemy’s numbers and technology level are far greater than first thought, but thanks to Mitsuo and Chiharu bravely staying close to the enemy forces and firing flares to help reveal their locations, Isla’s forces are able to avoid annihilation. Looks like the war is only just beginning, though…

Also jumping several places for the right reasons is Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil! The repeated, predictable, episodic court cases were starting to get tiresome, even with all the things going on in the background (Moyo’s incredible powers and obsession with Cecil, Cecil’s own development of new powers almost weekly, and suddenly Shizumu is a wizard too!?). Episode seven took a break from all that, though, and saw the cast take a business trip to America, followed by a road trip up to Canada with just Cecil, Nanajiinyi, Hotaru, and later a random hitch hiker who happened to also be Japanese and a barrister in training. 😛 It allowed for some character development, and now that Hotaru’s hostility towards Cecil seems to be toning down, I may start to find her less annoying. 🙂

I like Nasubi, a lot. :D

I like Nasubi. More for the way others react to him than anything else.

General comments:

Not a huge amount to say about Hozuki no Reitetsu – there’s still plenty of jokes I don’t get, but those I do understand are enough to ensure the show stays in or around my Top 5 every week. Ep 7 saw Hozuki trolling ‘treating’ Lord Enma’s bad back using increasingly sadistic methods… hope the fact that I find this so hilarious doesn’t make me a bad person. 😛

Hunter x Hunter is similarly, unchangingly, epic. The battles between the Hunters and the Chimera Ants are now fully underway, but (besides Shoot) we’ve yet to see anyone get defeated. It pained me not to be able to rank last week’s episode 1st based on Pitou and Gon’s exchange, but I couldn’t argue with Kill la Kill’s plot twists. This time we got to see more of Youpi, seeing how little he cared about Shoot and Knuckle compared with his duty to the King, and also seeing him develop a new, berserk mode! I do worry about Knuckle’s decision to continue battling him just out of pride, though – their original plan seems to be all but forgotten at this point!

Shaiapouf's waiting game against Morel is also interesting - the latter is getting increasingly nervous, even though he used similar tactics against Cheetu before!

Nagi no Asukara is one anime that may have slipped in the rankings if the other four shows had aired – the second, post-time skip arc still hasn’t won me over. The gradual reappearance and awakening of the Shioshishio classmates, the passage of time and the effects it’s had on the character’s relationships, as well as the mystery of Manaka losing her ena/Miyuna gaining an ena… there’s plenty going on, but I think that might be part of the problem. Too many twists, not enough pause for breath, similar (though not nearly as bad) as what’s happening with Samurai Flamenco. 😕
Manaka's awakening made for a surprise ending, though - I assumed she'd be asleep for a while longer.
