Summer 2014 Episode Rankings – Week 3

Even less change in the rankings this week… and the two anime that have moved significantly are ones I shared my thoughts on last week… Thankfully it’s still early in the season, and there are plenty of series I’ve not focused on yet, so I’ll take this as an excuse to do so. 😕

Zankyou no Terror seems as though it'll be hard to beat... but I'm fine with that as long as it stays this good!

Moving up:

Free! Eternal Summer makes its Top 10 debut – it’s fairing a lot worse than the first series did a year ago today, but (apart from the odd titan or two) I’d say the competition this season is of a higher standard overall. I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence or not, but it was in the third episode a year ago that Rei joined the Iwatobi High School swim team! In this week’s episode, though, he laments his lack of progress in learning strokes other than the butterfly, and begins to skip club practice. Naturally, the rest of the team jump to a number of incorrect conclusions and hilarious misunderstandings, but in reality he is getting one-to-one coaching from Rin. And by the end of the episode, he has learned several styles of swimming… though he’d probably best stick to the butterfly in tournaments. 😛

Moving down:

After a first episode that ranked highly mostly out of shock factor, Akame ga Kill! hasn’t impressed me much in the two episodes that followed. It seems that every member of the cast is getting an introductory episode, in the form of training sessions for new recruit Tatsumi, but so far they’re all coming across as generic. Tsundere with twin tails? Protagonist walks in while she’s changing? Need I say more. The overly evil and corrupt villains they’ve been dispatching suffer from the same problem. And as I mentioned in week 1, the animation quality isn’t up to the quality of the season’s other action shows either. What this series needs is an ongoing story arc with a recurring villain.

The puppet master Prime Minister introduced this week shows some promise as a 'last boss', at least!

General comments:

Zankyou no Terror is looking unbeatable at #1, despite the fact it lacks the action I usually crave. Rather, the focus for the past two episodes has been on the riddles set by ‘Sphinx’, revealing the location of their next bomb. Last week, the police failed to solve the riddle in time – but that’s only because Shibasaki was working in the archives. Now that he’s officially on the case, it seems Nine and Twelve have a worthy rival, as his solution to their ridiculously complex riddle results in the first successful discovery and disposal of the bombs! It’ll be interesting to see whether the two terrorists stick to their current strategy in light of this, and the fact that they now know they’ve been linked to the theft of the plutonium. And exactly what role Mishima Lisa will play in any of this is not yet clear either…

Now that my hype surrounding the new series has died down somewhat, Haikyuu!! is back up to where it was in the rankings last season. I’d like to see it rank higher, but the volleyball playing still isn’t entertaining me as much as the character interactions, dialogue and facial expressions, which remain first class. 😛 I did like the moment of consideration for the losing teams in this episode though – too often in sport-themed anime, the focus remains on the underdog protagonists and a small number of highly-ranked rivals… and Haikyuu!! will probably do exactly the same now that it’s gotten that out of the way, but I liked it nonetheless! The Karasuno vs Dateko rematch in the next episode should be good. 😀

Just avoiding last place for a second week in a row is Persona 4 The Golden Animation… I’m disappointed. The main plot revolving around Mayonaka TV, the murders, the titular Personas, all of that is absent. Instead, last week we had Yuu juggle clothes shopping with Marie while picking up girls with Yosuke, and this week we had a beach episode followed by Marie interviewing the rest of the cast on the meaning of ‘facing yourself’. I get that all of this is probably new material added (along with Marie herself) to Golden, and is happening AROUND the plot-relevant stuff from the first series… but when viewed separately like this, it just feels like horrendously-paced filler. On the plus-side, it did give me a few laughs, and Marie’s personality is developing if nothing else.

Finally this week, we have DRAMAtical Murder. The obvious thing to comment on would be the notable drop in animation quality this week, something that the animation studio has formally apologised about. It was certainly noticeable, and gave me a few laughs. But putting that aside… the series is turning out to be slower-paced than I expected, as there’s been no sign of Aoba being dragged back into another game of Rhyme. Instead, this episode saw a bunch of random guys break into his house, get beaten up by his granny, then invited downstairs for food. Koujaku we know, but the other two were the amusing Clear (who calls Aoba ‘master’, and eats through his gas mask) and the random Noiz (who kisses Aoba at the end of the episode, making up for the animation in many people’s eyes). 😛

I lost it at Ren's walking animations.
