2014 Anime – Top 12 ED Themes

Here we go again! Another list of my favourite anime songs of the year, but this time it’s the ending themes. As before, there will be links to all the songs provided, so that you can still judge me and my taste in music if you’re not already familiar with them. 😛

12: Witch Craft Works (“Witch☆Activity” by KMM Dan)

[FFF] Witch Craft Works - 06 [0B27DAB5].mkv_snapshot_22.15_[2014.12.06_20.44.37]

This theme is likely the most memorable thing about Witch Craft Works, a series which started off well but lost me towards the end. At least the song and accompanying animation are amusing. Torture never looked so moe!

11: Space Dandy (“X Jigen e Youkoso” by Etsuko Yakushimaru)

[Commie] Space Dandy - 07 [0D16F18D].mkv_snapshot_22.52_[2014.12.06_20.51.21]

There were plenty of memorable things in Space Dandy… some good, some not so good, but this theme falls into the first category. Probably isn’t enough to make me want to watch the second series, though.

10: Donten ni Warau (“ATTITUDE TO LIFE” by Galneryus)

[HorribleSubs] Donten ni Warau - 05 [720p].mkv_snapshot_20.44_[2014.12.06_21.01.34]

I’m starting to wonder whether these EDs only sounded so good because they signalled the end of the episodes of their respective series! Meh, at least Donten ni Warau has a few episodes left to try and win me over.

9: Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (“believe” by Kalafina)

[Commie] Fate⁄stay Night Unlimited Blade Works - 06 [D25026EF].mkv_snapshot_23.18_[2014.12.06_21.09.01]

Slowly getting better… the anime series they represent, that is. The themes are obviously getting better the closer we get to #1 😛 Also, obligatory Kalafina~ Of their two themes to make my lists this year, the Aldnoah Zero OP is slightly the better of the two, IMO.

8: Selector Infected WIXOSS (“realize -Yume no Matsu Basho-” by Cyua

[Asenshi] selector infected WIXOSS - 09 [D2A33A14].mkv_snapshot_23.03_[2014.12.06_21.15.04]

As with the OP list, I struggled to decide whether to go with the theme from ‘Infected’ or ‘Spread’. The former may well have only won because I spent over a season waiting for the full version to come out, and played it a lot when if finally did!

7: Free! Eternal Summer (FUTURE FISH” by STYLE FIVE)

[NSOnii] Free! Eternal Summer - 05 [720p][C4485C64].mkv_snapshot_23.06_[2014.12.06_21.22.19]

The first series of Free! set a high standard for fun ending themes, but the sequel didn’t disappoint either. 😀 I think SPLASH FREE is probably my favourite of the two songs, but this one had the more fun animation.

6: Psycho-Pass 2 (“Fallen” by EGOIST)

[Commie] Psycho-Pass 2 - 06 [859093A7].mkv_snapshot_21.41_[2014.12.06_21.29.06]

Psycho-Pass 2 places 6th for both OPs and EDs, and once again is the highest ranking out of this Autumn theme songs. This has been a great season for anime, but not so great for anime music IMO (with these few exceptions).

5: Blade & Soul (“RAINBOW” by LEGO BIG MORL)

[Chyuu] Blade and Soul - 06 [720p][8C940013].mkv_snapshot_23.04_[2014.12.06_21.53.31]

The accompanying animation might have been nicer without the weird boob jiggling… but this is Blade & Soul. 😛 And the song isn’t even a guilty pleasure, it’s actually really good! 😮

4: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (“Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles)

[Commie] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Stardust Crusaders - 06 [AD5ACEB2].mkv_snapshot_22.38_[2014.12.06_22.01.12]

Surprised they didn’t keep this song back for the Egypt Arc! Unless they plan to re-use it, which I wouldn’t mind at all. It’s rare that a song I know and like outside of anime goes on to become an anime theme… probably because I don’t listen to much outside of existing anime themes. 😛

3: Zankyou no Terror (“Dare ka, Umi wo.” by Aimer)

[FFF] Zankyou no Terror - 04 [451B0944].mkv_snapshot_22.04_[2014.12.06_22.09.03]

By far the most haunting ED theme of the year, at least out of those series I ended up keeping on. And if this list was based on ED animation alone, it would probably rank 1st.

2: Tokyo ESP (“Kyuusei Argyros” by Yousei Teikoku)

[FFF] Tokyo ESP - 05 [603E78CB].mkv_snapshot_24.03_[2014.12.06_22.20.44]

After a lot of hair-pulling and head-desking, I made the decision to rank a Yousei Teikoku song in second place instead of first. A much harder decision than any of the OP rankings!

1: Aldnoah.Zero (“aLIEz” by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:mizuki)

[Vivid-Watashi] Aldnoah Zero - 04 [79F89A8F].mkv_snapshot_22.59_[2014.12.06_22.29.34]

And finally, the narrow victor! If the second series of Aldnoah.Zero’s music is anywhere near as good as the first’s, then 2015 will be off to a very good start indeed. 😀

That’s all for anime themes this year, though the usual weekly rankings will resume tomorrow~

  1. Aldnoah.Zero did have some awesome music. And JoJo used a Bangles song for their opening? That is rare and very cool.

You know, isn’t Kyuusei Argyros reminiscent of the opening song of Elfen Lied? Both have plenty of red and a nude girl in them. Also, one gets the impression that the girl wishes for a savior in both songs. After all, Elfen Lied’s opening has a Christian theme (a religion focused on salvation) and savior is right in the title of the other.

The only problem with this idea is I never felt a connection between Lucy and Minami. Why bother creating a parallel in the ending song if one does not exist in the anime? Or is the connection I see far too tenuous? 🙂

A great list of ending songs. I enjoyed most of them myself.

    • Yeah, there are only a few other cases I can think of where songs I already knew have become anime themes – the obvious one being ‘Fly me to the Moon’ in Evangelion, but also Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Do You Want To’ in Paradise Kiss, Duran Duran’s ‘Girls on Film’ in Speed Grapher, and a Japanese version of ‘You Raise Me Up’ in Romeo x Juliet. Those are the only ones that spring to mind, at least.

I can see some similarity in the themes for Elfen Lied and Tokyo ESP, but can only assume they’re a coincidence – I do love both, though. 😀
