Winter 2016 Episode Rankings – Week 3

The timing of this season’s episodes is a bit annoying… for most of last year, the latest airing episodes seemed to fall on Saturdays or Sundays, making weekend blogging easy. This Winter though, everything seems to air between Thursday and Monday, while I work from Monday to Wednesday (sometimes Thursdays and/or Fridays too). So expect the variation in posting days to continue. 😛

A third Saika appears! And far stronger than the others, though it sounds like Anri may be able to do the same. :O

No doubt Kakeru will continue to lead Koharu into traps for many episodes to come...

No doubt Kakeru will continue to lead Koharu into traps for many episodes to come…

Moving up:

Norn9 continues to be shrouded in mystery, all the moreso now that we’re getting little snippets of backstories for the characters. Nanami and Akito’s relationship is particularly interesting – she seems to think he hates her for some reason, and also suspects him of being the traitor… and he’s hardly helping to clear his name by meeting with a shady-looking holographic guy in the middle of the night! All quite light-hearted apart from that though, as Kakeru continues to troll Koharu, and Mikoto emerges as the series’ bad artist. Don’t know what’s going on half of the time, but it is entertaining.

A new addition to the class in this week’s Ansatsu Kyoushitsu S2! After Itona’s latest attempt to assassinate Koro-sensei fails, he’s abandoned by Shiro, and goes berserk. But as usual, the teacher and classmates were able to help him out and win him over, and now he’s gone from feared enemy to just another delinquent. 😛 Decent amount of action, and a nice bit of back story for Itona as well. Shiro remains a mystery, but no doubt we’ll be seeing more of him later.

Koro-sensei with tweezers is scary!

Moving down:

Lupin III (2015) has had a run of hilarious episodes since the end of the Autumn season – I loved his escape from prison, the theft of the Mona Lisa, and the school episode! This week’s was quite generic by comparison though, and saw the gang trying to return a lost dog to its very wealthy, overly-doting owner. It didn’t end well for anybody, apart from perhaps the dog. 😛 While there was some decent banter between Lupin and Jigen, and Zenigata’s always entertaining, I’ve seen better. At least the unreliable subbing situation is no longer an issue! 😀

While Schwarzesmarken‘s drop this week is more to do with other series being really good as opposed to its third episode being bad, there are certainly things that it could be doing better. I’m struggling to care about any of the characters, and although it’s still quite early in the series, I feel I’m probably supposed to be caring about them at this point, judging by the near-death situations and narrow escapes they’ve been through already. Maybe that’ll change now that Theodore knows the truth about Irisdina, and they’ve agreed to work together. Either way, the arrival of his sister (who has Stasi spy written all over her) is bound to shake things up…

I wish I could have seen his deadpan reaction to THAT.

General comments:

A slower, slice-of-life/comedy episode from Dimension W this week, which helped a lot since this was another show where the characters hadn’t really gripped me… up until now! The interactions between the ‘highly advanced but definitely a robot’ Mira and the deadpan Kyouma were just brilliant. The kids were amusing too, and I like that they all agreed to keep Mira’s secret. We got a little story development as well, more information about the ‘Numbers’ among other things. An all-round great episode!

Bubuki Buranki still brings up the rear, though I am enjoying it – shame something has to come last! The odd pacing and lack of story development make it one of the most flawed series in my lineup, though the characters are very likable at least! Kinoa and Shizuru are my favourites (you never know what the latter is going to say or do next!), though Kogane’s huge flip in personality every time she sees her father’s killer makes her stand out too. The male members of the team need to stop arguing with each other, then maybe I’ll grow to like them as well. Plenty of potential here.

Movement in these full-3D anime may still be a little clunky, but they always seem to have the best facial expressions!
