The finale of Haikyuu!! S3 was one third volleyball, and two thirds victory celebrations~ Good pacing in my opinion, making sure that the final decisive play happened in the last episode, while also allowing plenty of time for the characters on both sides to react to the result afterwards. Animation, pacing, character interactions and development were fantastic throughout the series… just a shame I prefer fighting anime! I can see why Haikyuu!! is ranking as one of the best series ever on sites like A-P and MAL, but I don’t quite feel that same level of excitement myself. Still, I’ll be sure to pick up the fourth series if/when that happens. 🙂
With most other series still airing for another 2-3 weeks, there were a lot of build-up episodes. I generally rate those episodes low – even if the preparation pays off later, if it isn’t entertaining NOW, then I’ll rate it lower than the eps that are. Yuri!!! on Ice just did the impossible, by making a pre-Grand Prix final shopping episode the best of the series, by far. Yuri and Victor’s relationship is fantastic, their dialogue was fantastic, and those rings were a step further than I though the series would dare to take. Yuri had better win this thing now! His drunken antics and pole dancing duet with Chris were just the cherry on the cake. Again, I’d love to rate this higher along with everyone else, but then my rankings would be lies!
Hibike! Euphonium S2 finally dropped in the rankings last week, but it had a good run, and with a concert on the horizon I imagine the only way from here is up again! Kumiko’s heart to heart chat with her sister, and use of that experience to make sure Asuka didn’t also quit and regret it was very well written, despite the predictable conclusion. Plenty of drama and emotion, particularly in Kumiko’s final outburst. Asuka attacked her tendency to get involved in other people’s affairs while never taking direct action for fear of hurting people, something that was definitely true in the first half of this series, but Kumiko did a great job this time!
IT HAPPENED! After such a strong run for nine weeks, the sudden huge ranking drops that plagued its first series finally hit Bungou Stray Dogs S2. A shame, as with that the series’ chance at taking #1 overall for the season is pretty much dead, but I’m not feeling too sympathetic right now. That showdown between Edgar Alan Poe and the Japanese author who took on his name could have been amazing, but instead it ended up like every other bad detective series from recent years – literally no way for the viewer to join in and try to solve the murder mystery, with ridiculous details hidden from us. Great concept, terribly executed and horribly rushed, and oh how it made me rage. The last third was just build-up for what will hopefully be a much better next episode.
Still no #1 ranking for Drifters yet, despite it being the only series not to leave my Top 5, but that high average does mean it could ironically end up taking 1st place overall! We got a great look at the leader of the Ends, the Black King… I had strong suspicions before, but this guy has to be Jesus, with the holes in his hands and the ability to make limitless food from small quantities. His cruel treatment of the proud bronze dragon was painful to watch. Meanwhile, dwarven musket production means the Drifters will soon have a huge military advantage, and Saint-Germi’s offer to join them is an interesting development. Not bad for an episode without much warfare!
Occultic;Nine barely escapes the Bottom 5 once again – the developments are good, but there are far too many of them, and far too little episodes remaining for comfort! It has the same problem as Bloodivores in that regard, the difference being that at least Bloodivores is slow-paced enough that I’ve never been confused about what’s going on. The main revelations this week were that the annoying Ryo-tas was Zonko, and is being possessed by the secret daughter of Tesla. Her gun seems to be capable of making ghosts. And we got confirmation via the code that all the ghosts have indeed been treated with scandium. Meanwhile, someone in a creepy mask is erasing ghosts. So some answers, but the number of questions remains awfully high…
