2016 Anime – Top 12 OP Themes

Enough procrastinating, time for more lists! This time, my favourite OP themes of the year. I thought my music collection hadn’t grown much this year, and after going through all the series that aired in 2016 to remind myself of their opening themes, I can see why… a lot of forgettable ones. I think the ED post will be a lot better. But anyway, here’s the best of the bunch, in my opinion~

As ever, Youtube links (to the TV version of the song with animation where available) are in the titles, so you can hear for yourselves just how bizarre my taste in music is.

12: Anne-Happy (“PUNCH☆MIND☆HAPPINESS” by Happy Clover)

To start this off, not something I’d listen to on its own, but with the accompanying animation it was catchy, cute and amusing.

11: Show By Rock!! # (“Heart wo Rock!!” by Plasmagica)

Not as good as the first series’ OP… but that didn’t make my Top 12 last year, to give some idea of the standards this time around. Meh, again it’s catchy, and the animation is adorable.

10: Bubuki Buranki (“Beat your Heart” by Suzuki Konomi)

I’d forgotten about this one, way back last Winter, but that’s why I make sure to go back and check every show each year! This song just about beats that of the currently airing sequel.

9: Norn9 (“Kazakiri” by Yanagi Nagi)

Norn9 was a strange series, but this OP theme stuck with me. Nice and relaxing.

8: Amanchu! (“Million Clouds” by Sakamoto Maaya)

…but not as relaxing as that of Amanchu! A good iyashikei series’ healing starts right from the OP~ I have to be in the right mood for songs like this outside of the anime, though.

And now we’re into the songs that I actually still listen to on a regular basis outside of the episodes themselves. RIP Kawashima Michiyuki.

6: Boku dake ga Inai Machi (“Re:Re:” by Asian Kung-Fu Generation)

Another Winter series, but I didn’t need to go back and remind myself what this one sounded like. Definitely stood the test of time so far!

5: Durarara!! x2 Ketsu (“Steppin’ out” by FLOW)

Durarara!! always has good themes, but I found this one particularly catchy and fun to listen to. 😀

4: 3-gatsu no Lion “Answer” by BUMP OF CHICKEN

Bump of Chicken missed out on a place on last year’s list with their almost-as-good theme for Kekkai Sensen, despite how great they are… again, 2015’s competition was far tougher!

3: Yuri!!! On Ice (“History Maker” by Dean Fujioka)

The music and animation compliment each other (and fit the series itself) so magnificently, I had to rate this highly.

2: Drifters (Gospel Of The Throttle REMIX ver.” by Minutes Til Midnight)

Ditto what I said for Yuri!!! on Ice, except that I generally prefer rock. 😛 Once again though, no #1 spot for poor old Drifters!

1: Big Order (“DISORDER” by Yousei Teikoku)

Of course my #1 spot goes to Yousei Teikoku. Keeping up the tradition of the worst anime series having the best music, there had to be some reason I stuck with it until the end, after all!

As I say, I’ve not gone back and listened to all the EDs yet, but even if I kept it to shows that are airing right now it’d probably be a stronger Top 12 than this! So be sure to check back in a few days for that.
