Summer 2017 Episode Rankings – Week 4

Late, because I was left waiting for Princess Principal. And after near-misses with Hitorijime my Hero last week, and Ballroom e Youkoso before that, I get the feeling this won’t be the only time this happens either…

Speaking of Ballroom e Youkoso – two episodes in one week. No respect for my blogging format whatsoever. 😛 As I did with Berserk’s double-airing last season, since it’s one of the later airing shows anyway, I’ll only include the one ep in this post. I already have ep 5 ready for next week now, so that’s one less possible delay to worry about~

When internet trolling spills out into the real world. 😀

Moving up:

A surprisingly high ranking for Sakura Quest! And I was definitely feeling the ‘quest’ part of the title strongly this week, with the Queen and her ministers having to search for three long-lost treasures needed in order to resurrect an old festival. No doubt they’re spread out across the far reaches of Manoyama, rather than stored together somewhere safe as would be the sensible thing to do… We now know where one of these treasures is hidden, but its guardian isn’t going to give it up lightly! After a fairly amusing episode focusing on old people learning how to use technology (and they picked it up far quicker than any of my real-life clients, that’s for sure!), the fun came to an abrupt end with these same people kidnapping Koharu and demanding their bus route be restored. A nice dose of ‘drama’ and ‘adventure’, though obviously all lighthearted and fun. I hope. 😛

This season’s slice of life/comedy king so far has to be Gamers!, however. I’d never have expected that from the ‘ordinary high-school club anime’-sounding synopsis. 😮 Every week the cast grows, and the character relationships and misunderstandings get weirder and weirder, which I love. This week, Keita meets Chiaki, a kindred spirit whose taste in games seems to match his perfectly… but alas, their differing stance on moe proves to be too big a rift to overcome. Relapsing game-nerd and all-round nice guy Tasuku mediates, but his attempts to build up Chiaki’s confidence are taken completely the wrong way by his (highly neglected, to be fair) girlfriend Aguri – that cliffhanger ending! A VERY well-done rom-com, but that’s likely because the focus is more on the com than the rom, appealing to my tastes.

And then there’s the Gaming Club’s Tendou Karen, who’s beyond help at this point.

Moving down:

Made in Abyss is doing a masterful job when it comes to world building. This unknown chasm leading to nowhere, with its different levels, all of which have cool names and increasingly dangerous hazards… I can’t wait for Riko and Regu’s adventures to truly begin! I suppose that technically they’ve already started, but seeing as they’re exploring familiar territory, and it was revealed that their great escape was at the very least permitted by their Leader, it didn’t feel that way in this episode. Given that Red Whistles who descend into the second layer (the sinister-sounding Forest of Temptation) are considered to have committed suicide, I’m guessing the danger will ramp-up big time from there. I wouldn’t mind seeing the pacing pick up too, or else we’re not going to see much of this Abyss, in this series at least!

In case people skipped the intro, the score for Ballroom e Youkoso was for ep 4 alone – come back next week for my thoughts on ep 5! I’ve been meaning to say something for a couple of weeks, but this series manages to make ballroom dancing look absolutely terrifying. I’m not even talking about the injuries here, I mean the combination of ridiculously long necks and limbs, slicked back hair and maniacal grins… I don’t think I’ve seen faces like that on anyone other than villains, outside of this show! That observation aside, plenty of drama as Hyoudou injures his leg, and both he and Shizuku end up temporarily suspended from dance competitions (a deliberate move by Sengoku by the looks of things)! Very intense. On the downside, a lot of static panning again, my comments on the animation back in ep 1 haven’t held true for the three that followed. 😦

Out of context, this could blatantly be revealing a last boss’ final form. 😮

General comments:

Time to give some attention to the rest of last season’s veterans: Shingeki no Bahamut – Virgin Soul ranks 2nd for the 2nd time in a row, mostly thanks to the great characters. It was another Nina x Chariose ep this week, with the former (disguised as a demon) running into the latter (in his usual disguise, which he shed as the ep progressed) as he visited his mother’s grave. We finally got some backstory for this complex character, someone who I can only see as a villain, but whom the creators obviously want us to feel some sympathy for… we still don’t know his true goals or motives though, so I’m withholding judgement until that point. Their romance is VERY cliche, I’ll admit, but Nina’s faces make up for it. And she can now control her dragon transformations, which should come in handy as the final battle presumably draws closer!

Still coming close to the red zone yet somehow miraculously avoiding it is Re-Creators – the obligatory hot springs episode, but it didn’t feel fanservice-heavy for a change. If anything, it made sense for them all to relax after their mammoth scriptwriting task. This ep was mostly build-up, before the Elimination Chamber Festival plan was finally launched in a grand event at the end of the episode. I look forward to seeing how they’ve managed to link all these diverse characters and series into one story, that makes enough sense to avoid infuriating all the fans with plot inconsistencies! That’s assuming they’ll let us in on the Festival’s plot, anyway. The coming battles should be all the more fun, now that all the creations have upgraded abilities. And while all this is going on, no sign of Magane, which can only be a bad thing for them (and a good thing for us viewers)!

[HorribleSubs] Re-Creators - 16 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.53_[2017.07.29_22.09.11]

An anime character from an anime within an anime making jokes about it not being an anime… my head hurts.
