A week after I add it to my lineup, Youjo Senki airs a recap episode, threatening to leave my tidy rankings with a gap for the first time all season! Fortunately, its 7th episode still aired well in advance of ClassicaLoid and 3-gatsu no Lion, so I included it anyway.
Since I’m at Minamicon anime convention next weekend, Week 8’s rankings will be delayed big-time, but hopefully that’ll be the last disruption for a while.
A 2nd time at #1 for Kuzu no Honkai! Don’t know why I like this screenshot so much, but at least it isn’t depressing or X-rated like everything else in the series. 😛

Loved the black and white animation during Takuru’s rush to find Yui.
Moving up:
Ignoring the bigger jumps, which are just shows returning to their usual spots following bad weeks, we have Chaos;Child. I didn’t enjoy this back in Week 3, and the poor character introduction and development from then is still holding it back… but the plot, the building sense of mystery and horror, and the animation directing can’t be faulted. Yui’s death certainly wasn’t expected, and even if the series has given me little reason to care about her, the scene was so brutal that I wouldn’t wish it on any minor character! Again, this is sadly no Steins;Gate, but it is getting better.
Masamune-kun no Revenge places in the single digits for only the second time, despite it being the obligatory beach episode! This week’s test of courage was much funnier than anything episode six had to offer. New character Yuisaki was amusing, first trying to break up Masamune and Aki’s (fake) relationship, only to fall for the former’s nice guy act herself later on. Plus we got another flashback to Aki’s childhood, presumably right after the ‘Pig’s Foot’ incident, so it wasn’t all swimsuits and comedy.
The coffee shop master’s imagination and advice were largely what saved Gabriel DropOut from the red this week.
Moving down:
A week after Gabriel DropOut‘s first Top 5 ranking, it ends up in the double figures for the first time. This episode mostly focused on Vignette trying and failing to be more evil, to prevent her allowance from Hell from dropping any further… meh, I tend to prefer the angels behaving badly, or Satania’s chuunibyou grandstanding. Vignette is too nice, and sadly a bit boring when she’s the main focus, as opposed to when she’s reacting to the others. The counting cerberi/Gabriels songs were cute, but not overly funny either.
Definitely the least amusing of the comedy shows is still Urara Meirochou. I stand by my earlier admission that I was too hard on it in my rankings for Week 1, but there have been some truly underwhelming episodes since. This week’s first half was particularly slow, as the girls tried different methods of memorizing various invocations, and in the second half we got to find out why Koume likes Western witches so much. Some character background for her and Nono was nice, I guess, but the pacing is so slow and the gags so infrequent/mild that it nearly sent me to sleep.
Another beach episode, too… Kanna eating things was cute, though.
General comments:
Sticking with the comedy, even the once high-ranking Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon has been out of the green zone for 5 weeks now. This often happens once the plot-focused shows get started, but in addition to that, I feel that most of the initial gags involving dragons interacting with humans have now been used up. At this point Tooru and Co. have a better understanding of what’s appropriate in human society and what isn’t, while Kobayashi-san is also used to their super speed and strength etc. Hopefully next week’s promised new dragon will shake things up a bit.
This week’s episode of ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka opened with Jean’s 2 minute musings about everything he (and we the viewer) knows about the supposed coup – who suspects who, who’s siding with who, etc. The fact that he was able to summarize the entire plot of the last 6 episodes in so little time largely explains why it ends up in the red zone so often; not much else actually happens, besides shopping for and consuming bread! The sudden revelation this week that Jean and his sister may be royalty is an unexpected twist, but again, that was the only new info.
The bread does sound nice though, I’m not denying that!
